What is tyre speed rating?
Speed rating
is designed to tell you the top speed at which your tyres can still perform at their
optimum level. It is vital to ensure you have a tyre fitted to your vehicle that
will perform at the kind of speeds your vehicle is designed to travel.
The speed rating of your tyre can be found on the on the outside of the tyre wall.
It’s shown as a letter after your tyre size in the picture. In this case it’s a
V rated tyre which indicates the speed rating.
Insurance companies can get a little prickly when it comes to the speed rating issue,
and may even revoke any insurance claim that results from tyre failure if you don’t
select the correct tyre.
Tyre speed rating table data:
For instance a W rated tyre is one that can perform up to 168 mph…too fast for UK
roads! So if you have no intention of driving at those kind of speeds, or perhaps
your car is not capable of driving at those speeds you could choose a lower speed
rating – like a V or H for instance. By choosing a lower speed rating you could
save money howeverdo not choose a lower rating just to save money – we urge you
to think of your safety and that of others around you first.
